Cookies & Local Storage Policy
Last updated: March 2026 · Effective immediately
This page explains what Akoto Shule stores in your browser, why we store it, and how you can clear it. It supplements our Privacy Policy and is provided so anyone — staff, parents, or visitors — can review it without signing in.
1. What are cookies and local storage?
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser when you visit a website. They are commonly used to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, or measure how a site is used.
Local storage is a similar mechanism built into modern browsers. It allows a site to save small amounts of data on your device until you choose to clear it. Akoto Shule primarily uses local storage — not traditional cookies — for its session and preference data.
2. What we store and why
The following items may be stored in your browser when you use Akoto Shule:
| Key | Type | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| akoto-auth | Essential | Stores JWT access and refresh tokens so you stay signed in between page loads. |
| akoto-theme | Preference | Remembers your chosen display theme (light, dark, or system). |
| akoto-accent | Preference | Remembers your accent colour for the interface. |
| akoto:home-theme | Preference | Remembers the colour palette you picked on the home page. |
| akoto:cookie-consent | Essential | Records that you have seen and dismissed the cookies banner, so we don't show it again. |
We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, cross-site analytics, or third-party marketing pixels. No data is sold or shared with advertisers.
3. Third-party services
Some pages may load resources from third parties that themselves set cookies under their own policies:
- Cloudflare — CDN, DDoS protection and file storage. May set short-lived security cookies.
- Safaricom Daraja (M-Pesa) — Only invoked when a parent initiates a fee payment.
- Africa's Talking — Used for SMS delivery; no cookies on this site.
We do not control cookies set by these providers. Please consult their respective privacy policies for details.
4. How to clear or block cookies
You can clear local storage and cookies at any time via your browser settings. Doing so will sign you out and reset your preferences. Quick links:
- Chrome / Edge / Brave — Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data.
- Firefox — Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data.
- Safari — Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data.
- Mobile — Browser settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data / Site data.
Note: blocking the akoto-auth entry will prevent you from staying signed in. Essential storage is required for the Platform to function.
5. Your rights
Under the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 you have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of personal data held about you. See section 9 of our Privacy Policy for the full list of rights and how to exercise them, or contact our Data Protection Officer at service@akotogrouplimited.com.
6. Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookies Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the Platform after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
